What is ISMP Japan?

International Student Mentorship Program Japan (ISMP) is a non-profit organization made up of working professionals who graduated from top schools in the U.S. and have experience working at large, international firms.

We provide mentorship for Japanese college students interested in studying or experiencing American culture. Studies show that America and Japan are often on opposite sides of the cultural spectrum. We aim to bridge that gap because we believe that meaningful cross-cultural connections can transform lives. That’s why ISMP Japan also provides cultural exchange events, homestay programs, and more.

ISMP mentorship is based on Christian values and virtues. However, the content is largely non-religious and open to all students, regardless of their religious or cultural backgrounds.

ISMP Connect Program

ISMP Connect Program

Hear from Manato about his time in America

If you are traveling to America, the ISMP Connect Cultural Exchange Homestay Program can connect you an ISMP mentor who will be your host family in America. They will host you in their home for up to two weeks for FREE, show you the best spots in their city, and teach you American culture!

What is ISMP Connect?

Experience America. Live It From the Inside.

ISMP Connect is a two-week cultural immersion program that places Japanese university students with American host families — no study visa required. You'll stay in a real home, explore your host's city, try things you'd never find in a guidebook, and build a genuine friendship across cultures.

This isn't a tour package. It's an open door into everyday American life.

What's included:

  • 🏠 Homestay accommodation — fully covered

  • 🚗 Local transportation — fully covered

  • 🗓️ Two weeks at any time of year, in a city of your choosing

What you cover:

  • ✈️ Your flight to the U.S.

  • 🍽️ Your own meals

To apply, you'll need to:

  1. Complete an orientation interview

  2. Attend two ISMP events (your choice)

  3. Join a Zoom call with your prospective host family

ISMP Japan is a nonprofit founded by American university mentors. We exist to connect people across one of the world's widest cultural distances — and we believe those connections change lives.

Studying in Japanese Universities, Canada or America? Need a mentor (先輩)?

Cultural stress is real! Adjusting to life in a new city or country can be difficult. However, studies show a correlation between social support and stress acculturative on university students. That means that more social support could lead to lower cultural stress! At ISMP, we want to support and prepare you for life in Canada, and America before you land or support you at your local university, here in Japan so that you can be ready to embrace all that is to come. Meaningful cross-cultural connections can transform lives and we don’t want you to miss out!
